This is my tribute to Joan Hayes’ blog Chocolate, Chocolate and More!
My friend Joan, from Chocolate, Chocolate and More passed away in her sleep a few days ago. I had been working on Yum Goggle all day, so I did not read the news feed on my personal Face Book page until around 5:00 PM. When I read a post from someone saying “Joan” had passed away, it never crossed my mind that it could be MY Joan. My Joan was four years younger than me and had been having the time of her life, recently taking trips with her beloved children, family, and to meet other bloggers – not HER. It just couldn’t be……… but sadly, it was. I was stunned for a while, staring at the TV but not seeing or hearing it. I couldn’t believe it! Maybe it was just one of those crazy Internet rumors that get started with a grain of truth and end up sounding like the world as we know it is about to end – I rationalized. When I went back to my news feed, there it was – a post from her cousin saying that in fact, it was true. I felt kind of sick.
I met Joan 4 years ago, just before she became famous. She and another blogger befriended me, sharing their knowledge having many 3-way Face Book message conversations that would go on for long periods of time. She and I had several things in common and one of those bound us together personally. I don’t know many other people who have had a good experience in our shared situation. Another of our conversations centered around my heart issue and how I had to go to four physicians before finally one of them listened to me – and actually tested my heart, finding that I have a bad ticker. Most of them said I was too young. One said my symptoms were not indicative of heart problems while another thought I was depressed………I knew that was because females present symptoms differently than men, but still – if a doctor will not order a test – nothing can be proven or verified.
Joan died of a massive heart attack in the night. Please, if you do one thing for yourself this year, get a full on physical and have your heart checked. If your back hurts or you feel nauseous for no reason or if you feel like you do when you are startled but you haven’t been startled —– GET YOUR HEART CHECKED —- and keep going to physicians until you find one who will! In February, hospitals often run heart tests for $50, find one near you that does and if you have to save a couple of dollars a week until then – GET IT DONE! You won’t be sorry. I don’t care how young you are you are never too young. I was 42 when I was diagnosed. Just do it.
As the years went by, Joan became wildly popular on all social media. She and I remained friends talking by email regularly. When Holli and I bought Yum Goggle, Joan was so supportive and encouraging offering any information she had that she felt would be helpful. She posted submissions even though she had over 2 million followers – she was just really supportive that way. She used to say that in a couple of years, I would be ruling the Food Site world! I love her sense of humor and will miss it greatly. Recently, she gathered a team of bloggers to help her with posts and they will most likely carry on her blog with posts of their own for some time to come.
The following is a Recipe Roundup of all the recipes Joan shared on Yum Goggle. I’ve listed all her social media – please visit and comment. Remember, she has three children who are probably reading every single word and it would do them good to hear from you because their mom isn’t coming back.

***It took me 2 days but I pinned every single recipe, social media and even one crafting post that Joan ever put out on her blog – on the above mentioned Pinterest board. I won’t be adding recipes to it of course but the board will be a quick way to find a particular recipe that you cannot remember the name of – but know what it looks like! There are 507 posts, all written by Joan from the very first one in 2011 to the last one in October of 2015.*****
