In this installment of Behind the Blog Blogger Spotlight I introduce you to David from Cooking Chat. I’ve known David’s blog for a while now but only recently started participating in blogging events where he was also a participant. Many of them centered around wine and food pairings, of which David is very knowledgeable. I hope you enjoy learning about him and Cooking Chat.

How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I have been blogging for over 10 years. I started around the time our son was born. Realizing we weren’t going to be able to get out for nice restaurant meals as often, I focused on enhancing my cooking skills and wine pairing knowledge so that we could have great meals at home. Cooking Chat helped me to share about that process and to keep track of what I was learning.
Do you have a secret recipe you aren’t willing to share?
No but my father does! He likes to make his mother’s spaghetti and meatballs recipe a couple of times per year for special occasions. Any attempts to get a copy of the recipe are quickly deflected!
If you were stranded on a desert island with only one food, what would you choose?
I’m going to say pasta with kale pesto. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to catch some fish to add to it from time to time, and eat some fresh fruit along with it!
How did you come up with your blog’s name?
I called the blog “Cooking Chat” to suggest the conversational style I was seeking, sharing my journey as a cook. Around the time I started Cooking Chat, also was writing a bimonthly column I called “Wine Chat” with a similar style, so the names went hand in hand.
What are you passionate about besides food?
In my case, the passion on Cooking Chat is about food and wine, and putting the two together… but assuming you are looking for things beyond the blog here, my other passions include family, baseball, reading and spending time walking / hiking in nature. I also continue to be passionate about the community building work of the nonprofit organization, Social Capital Inc., which I founded 15 years ago.
What is your favorite food to make?
A slowly cooked pasta sauce with meat, garlic and herbs that bring good smells into the house is the first thing that comes to mind. Probably because I have one of those sauces on the week’s menu! Hard to pick one favorite, overall I love coming up with new recipes that will pair well with a particular bottle of wine.
What is your favorite thing to order when you are out to eat?
Indian food. I do some Indian cooking, but it’s hard to match what I can get at a good Indian restaurant.
Who are some of your favorite bloggers?
I really enjoy the circle of bloggers that have developed around several food and wine groups we have created– Wine Pairing Weekend, French Winophiles and Italian Food, Wine and Travel. I find myself visitin the kitchn frequently to reference recipes and techniques. I have also learned a lot about blogging from Pinch of Yum so I’d mention them too.
What are some of your favorite recipes on your blog?
Kale pesto is definitely one of my favorites, and gets featured a lot of ways–in lasagna, as a topping for fish, and of course tossed with pasta. My Sweet Potatoes with Cumin Sage Butter is one of my favorite recipes that doesn’t get as much traffic as it should! My Best Portuguese Kale Soup recipe is one of the most popular on the blog, and is frequently made in our kitchen.
What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I like connecting with a virtual community of people that share my passion for good food and wine.
