How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I started blogging at the 28th of June 2017. I was inspired by my sister who has a food blog called lacomidadeliciosa.nl for more than 3 years now. She really enjoys it and uses it as a creative outlet to be able to share here favorite recipes with others. So I decided to start a blog as well as I love to cook and combine it with photography and video. To combine these joys are the main reasons why I started my blog.
Secondly I started my blog to see if it is still possible in 2017 to start a food blog and be able to make a living out of it. A lot of food bloggers started a couple of years ago and were able to turn it into a new career. I want to see if it is still possible in 2017.
Do you have a secret recipe you aren’t willing to share?
I do not have a secret recipe at the moment that I am not willing to share. Most of my recipes I learned from my father or are from old cookbooks that I have and I have adapted and made my own.
So many recipes are shared, adapted and adjusted that it seems almost impossible to have a secret recipe. But who knows what I come up with. If I create the next KFC recipe or Coca Cola recipe I might not be too keen to share.
If you were stranded on a desert island with only one food, what would you choose?
That is a tough question!!! Just one food would be impossible to choose. There are so many foods that I absolutely love. Like mango or bananas or chocolate that I use in a lot of my recipes and of course tortilla’s, obviously.
If I can choose a whole dish I would say my father chicken roti (I shared that recipe on my blog). I have eaten it about a million time but it is always a dish I look forward to make and eat.
How did you come up with your blog’s name?
I did not want to be the everything for everybody kind of blog. So I wanted a name that was about something specific, a niche even. So I thought about what would qualify? I like to eat tortilla’s and taco’s and then thought this is a great metaphor.
Because just about every kitchen, country or culture has its own version of the tortilla. Some call it roti, omelet, naan, pancake or even pizza. So I thought if it is called a tortilla, if it looks like a tortilla, has the shape of a tortilla, if it is called a tortilla or you can eat it with tortilla it can be on my blog.
As I watch a lot of golf I thought why not call it the Tortilla Channel just like the Golf Channel. With video’s I can make my own channel on Youtube. That is how the name came about. I stay close to the general theme of my channel but every once in awhile I make something of topic that are just my favorite recipes. Usually they do contain at least flour or have a round shape but I have embraced the thought that not every recipe has to be a tortilla.
What are you passionate about besides food?
I am really passionate about sports either to do myself (I do strength training and play golf) because I think it is important to treat your body well to nourish it with the right food and to keep in shape (very necessary when you have a food blog by the way). I also like to watch a lot of sports on television. I have great respect for athletes who put aside everything, to focus on that one goal in hope to win.
Besides sports I’m also passionate about photography. Photography has fascinated me ever since I was little. When I turned 18, I received my first SLR camera. I never really learned how to use a camera properly even with my first DSLR. So 7 years ago I decided to go back to school and learn how to use my camera. A whole new world opened up when I finally understood what everything was for and how I could use my camera properly. This knowledge comes in really handy now that I have a food blog and appetizing images is key in my opinion.
What is your favorite food to make?
I love to make classic beef tacos.
What is your favorite thing to order when you are out to eat?
When we go out to eat I like to order Asian food, Peking duck is one of my favorites.
Who are some of your favorite bloggers?
First of all my sister Antoinette with her food blog https://lacomidadeliciosa.nl who blogs in three languages Dutch, English and Spanish. She shares really delicious not everyday kind of recipes.
I could name all of the “big food bloggers” we know and like (me included) however I like to mention Liv from https://yummytastefood.com. She makes mostly vegetarian recipes and is also new in the food blogging world trying to find her way.
Lastly Amanda from https://saporitokitchen.com/ who shares great recipes and is always very supportive on social media.
What are some of your favorite recipes on your blog?
As mentioned before I love this chicken roti recipe of my father
I really like to make this soft tortilla/flatbread recipe.
It goes great with taco’s like in this tender carnitas tenderloin tacos
But a must try with this spicy thai red chicken curry recipe
A different kind of hamburger is the big BBQ chicken wrap burger
Also love sweet recipes like this sweet organic apple galette
And finally this vegan banana peanut butter pancakes with homemade peanut butter
What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I would say the process of creating, making and sharing my recipes. Just about every recipe has its own 1 minute video. So my readers can really learn how to make a recipe because I show them how it is done. It is also really nice when readers share that they made a recipe and enjoyed it. That really makes my day.
